Are U.S. Embassies and Consulates Still Processing Immigrant Visas?
Many families waiting for U.S. immigrant visas have questions about interview cancellations, lengthy delays, and cases in which applicants have completed their interviews but have not received their visas.
U.S. immigrant visa processing has not stopped worldwide. However, interview availability, visa restrictions, administrative processing, and local consular operations may affect individual applications.
Understanding these differences can help applicants determine their next steps.
1. Important Changes in 2026
In January 2026, the U.S. Department of State announced a pause on immigrant visa issuance affecting nationals of 75 countries, including Cambodia.
According to the Department of State's August 28, 2026 update, that particular pause ended effective August 21, 2026, following a federal court order.
However, separate restrictions under Presidential Proclamation 10998 remain in effect for certain nationalities. These restrictions may affect visa issuance even when an applicant is permitted to submit an application or attend an interview.
Applicants should review the current rules applicable to their nationality and visa category rather than assuming that all immigrant visas are suspended.
2. Why Might an Immigrant Visa Interview Be Canceled or Delayed?
Interview appointments may be affected by several factors, including:
- Limited appointment availability at a particular embassy or consulate.
- Changes in consular operations or scheduling.
- Visa number availability in family-sponsored or employment-based preference categories.
- Additional case review or documentation requirements.
- Applicable nationality-based visa restrictions.
A canceled or postponed appointment does not automatically mean that an immigrant visa petition has been denied.
Applicants should carefully review official communications from the National Visa Center (NVC) or the embassy or consulate handling their cases.
3. What If the Interview Is Completed but No Visa Has Been Issued?
Completing an interview does not guarantee immediate visa issuance.
Some applications require additional documents or administrative processing, including processing under Section 221(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Other cases may be affected by a specific legal restriction.
Applicants should follow the instructions provided by the consular officer and avoid assuming that a delayed visa has been approved or denied without reviewing the official case information.
The Department of State advises applicants not to make irreversible financial or travel commitments before receiving their immigrant visas.
4. How Can Applicants Check Their Cases?
Applicants may use the following official government resources:
CEAC Visa Status Check https://ceac.state.gov/CEACStatTracker/Status.aspx
National Visa Center Processing Information https://nvc.state.gov/timeframes
Immigrant Visa Interview Scheduling Status https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/visa-information-resources/iv-wait-times.html
U.S. Embassy and Consulate Information https://www.usembassy.gov/
The interview scheduling tool provides general information about the documentarily complete cases currently being scheduled at participating consular posts. It does not guarantee an individual appointment date.
5. What Should Applicants Do While Waiting?
Applicants should monitor their email and CEAC account, keep their contact information current, and follow instructions from the NVC or the appropriate U.S. embassy or consulate.
If an interview has been canceled, applicants should review the cancellation notice for rescheduling instructions.
If an interview has already taken place, applicants should follow any document requests or instructions issued by the consular post.
Most importantly, do not rely solely on rumors or social media reports. Visa policies and consular operations can change, and circumstances may differ from one country or individual case to another.
